The Unofficial CCNY Advertising Club is the in-the-making CCNY chapter of the national American Advertising Federation (AAF) student club. The reimagined CCNY AAF is being led by Professor Javier Garcia, a CCNY '09 and '15 alum and former advertising account executive who now teaches in CCNY's Ad/PR program.
The CCNY AAF is looking for NEW RECRUITS to join their existing cohort of high-achieving advertising, public relations, and communications students. Meet new friends, work on projects that will net you real experience -- you know the struggle about needing experience before you get a job? THIS is where you can get THAT kind of experience that will have you ready before you graduate. In addition to building your social network and being the first to know about upcoming events and guest lecturers, you can also help produce the CCNY AAF podcast, "Where We Fit," which explores the topic of diversity, equity & inclusion from the perspectives of CCNY alums in the communications industry. After 5 years of the club being inactive, through the efforts of the Ad/PR students and Professor Javier Garcia, we are hard at work to build this club back up from the ground and transform it into something bigger than we could have imagined. Behind the scenes, Professor Garcia and Eggie Peña, along with a number of other Ad/ PR students, and even an alumni, were working on reviving the AAF Student Chapter. In doing so, we aim to create an opportunity to showcase their talents of marketing and communications through a creative outlet that was not typically offered in the existing curriculum. When COVID-19 hit and schools transitioned into remote learning, CCNY AAF’s plans came to a complete halt. Despite this, passion prevails because when life throws you lemons, you make lemonade. Completely remote and still an unofficial club, Eggie presented the idea of creating a student-led podcast interviewing marketing and communication professionals as a guide in the professional world and the Ad/ PR industry. The idea of a podcast attracted several of the current members of the AAF, including myself, Monique Carchi. I learned of the opportunity through Francini Balbuena, who is now our PR Specialist and Communications Strategist. I had experience in building a podcast from scratch, as it was a personal project of mine the previous summer. As I listened to Eggie’s presentation, I saw lots of potential that this group could create something great. However, I also saw a lot of holes in their plan that someone with my skill set and experience could help fill. I knew I would be vital personnel in this project. Fast forward 3 months and we wrap our first season with 3 episodes, having interviewed industry professionals. We structured the basis of the podcast and its production guidelines. Executed creative strategies, curated promotional tactics on social platforms, exemplified technical skills through content management, video editing, and graphic design, and practiced PR responsibilities of outreach and communication. With such a small team having to create the very foundation we dared to stand on, wearing several hats throughout its process, we created a product that we were proud of. It seems that people were impressed because we are currently in the works of turning the podcast into an independent study course. This will allow students to gain a larger skillset of varying roles while encouraging creative freedom and growth. Practicing the fundamentals of product building and development, campaign strategy, communications, and media production skills. And they get to do it with a highly passionate and interactive team that constantly leans and learns from the other. A rotation of practices, bettering the potential and confidence of each member. The existing members of the AAF Student Chapter are excited to welcome new members so we can continue to create a great product, expand it, and create even more projects. The sky’s the limit here and we welcome you to join us for the Season 2 premiere of ‘Where We Fit’ Podcast, Friday 04/23/21! Written by Monique Carchi |
